Key takeaways
  • Dallas vehicle storage ranges from outdoor spaces to enclosed drive-up units to specialist indoor car facilities. Price listings seen in October 2026 ran from "starting at $29" to $300 a month and more.
  • A 10x20 unit holds a standard sedan or small-to-midsize SUV; large pickups, large SUVs and vans need 10x25 or 10x30, according to Public Storage's Dallas page.
  • Measure the full length, including hitch or trailer tongue, and the height against the door opening, not just the floor.
  • Under Texas law, unpaid storage on a titled vehicle or boat triggers notices to you and every lienholder, and the operator may have it towed instead of auctioned.

Storing a vehicle in Dallas is a different decision from storing boxes. The size question is mostly about length and door height. The cost question is mostly about which kind of space you rent.

What kinds of vehicle storage are there in Dallas?

Search results for Dallas car storage in October 2026 showed four broad tiers, from self-storage chains through peer-to-peer parking listings to specialist indoor clubs.[2] The tiers are our grouping:

TierWhat you getTrade-off
Outdoor spaceA marked spot in a fenced lotLowest cost; full sun and weather exposure
Covered spaceA spot under a roof or canopy, open sidesShade and overhead cover; still open to dust and heat
Enclosed drive-up unitA 10x20 to 10x30 unit with a roll-up doorLocked and enclosed; ask about ventilation and temperature; door height limits tall vehicles
Specialist indoor storageIndoor, often climate-controlled, sometimes with servicesHighest cost; one listing showed $300 a month for standard vehicles and $400 for oversized

For price context, Extra Space’s search listing for Dallas car and vehicle storage read “starting at $29 and averaging $153 per month”. That figure mixes the tiers above.[2]

What size do I need?

Public Storage’s Dallas page gives these rules of thumb:[1]

  • 10x20: “a standard sedan, sports car, or small to midsize SUV”, about 200 square feet.
  • 10x25 or 10x30: “large pickup trucks, large SUVs, and cargo vans”, with extra room for gear.

Before you reserve:

  1. Measure the overall length, including bumpers, hitch and trailer tongue. For boats, include the trailer and outboard.
  2. Measure the height to the highest point (roof rack, antenna, T-top, RV air conditioner) and ask for the door opening height, which is lower than the ceiling.
  3. Check the width with mirrors out against the door width.
  4. Ask where you can park the vehicle you arrive in while you swap.

The size planner draws each unit to scale so you can check length.

Dallas heat and stored vehicles

DFW averages about 106 days a year at 90°F or above.[4] For long-term storage, follow the vehicle or engine manufacturer’s storage instructions (battery, fuel, tires). If heat matters for the vehicle, a covered or indoor tier is the way to reduce sun exposure. See the climate-control guide for what to ask.

Texas rules if storage goes unpaid

Titled vehicles and boats have their own steps under Texas Property Code Chapter 59:[3]

  • Within 30 days of taking possession, the operator must notify the last known owner and every lienholder on the title by verified mail. The notice says the vehicle may be sold if not paid before the 31st day (§59.0445).
  • Alternatively, if the rental agreement allows it and the claim is unpaid by the 14th day after the notice of claim, the operator may have the vehicle or boat towed to a vehicle storage facility (§59.052). The storage lien ends when it is towed (§59.053), and the operator is not liable for damage during or after the tow (§59.055).

If you have a car loan, your lender is notified. The full timeline is in Texas storage lien law, step by step.

Questions to ask a Dallas vehicle storage facility

  • Is the space outdoor, covered or enclosed, and what is the exact size and door height?
  • Do you require proof of registration or insurance? Check with your own insurer how your policy treats a stored vehicle.
  • What are the access hours? Can you get in early for a lake weekend?
  • Is there an electric hookup for a battery maintainer, or a dump station for RVs?
  • Does the rental agreement allow towing under §59.052 if payment is late?
